The British Museum has exciting plans to step into the metaverse by partnering with The Sandbox, in collaboration with French startup LaCollection, to create a diverse range of NFT digital collectibles. These unique NFTs will showcase the extensive and diverse collections of The British Museum, offering immersive experiences for users.

Within The Sandbox's online game world, The British Museum will establish its own immersive space, joining other prominent cultural icons like Snoop Dogg, McDonald’s, Adidas, and Gucci. Sebastien Borget, COO, and co-founder of The Sandbox, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting how it presents an excellent opportunity for players to delve into the wealth of human history, art, and culture preserved within The British Museum's collections.

This venture is not the museum's first involvement in the Web3 space. Prior collaborations with LaCollection led to the release of three NFT collections. The first collection featured 200 digital postcards showcasing works by Katsushika Hokusai and was auctioned in September 2021. The second collection, auctioned in spring 2022, offered 20 tokenized versions of artworks by British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner. The most recent NFT artwork sale showcased 20 pen and chalk drawings from the collection, created by Venetian-born draftsman Giambattista Piranesi.
